Heat-resistant steel and pipes — this is steel resistant to corrosive impact of oxidising gases at high temperatures. Steel heat-resistance results mostly from the possibility of formation of compact scale on its surface (passivation). Up to the temperature of ca. 560 °C iron oxidising takes place relatively slowly (Fe3O4, magnetite is formed), while above thise temperature scale is mostly formed by wustite which makes up a solid solution with the excess of oxygen atoms what allows for diffusion of iron ions and accelerates oxidation.
Polish Standard PN lists a group of heat-resistant and refractory steel, among which are those marked with the following symbols: h5m, h6s2, 2h17, h13js, h18js, h24js, h25t, H26N4, H18N9S, H23N13, h20n12s2, h23n18, h25n20s2, h18n25s2 and valve steel: h9s2, h10s2m, 4h14n14w2m, 50h21g9n4.
